Ex.fm is quickly becoming my favorite online music service - even above Last.fm, Pandora, Rdio, and especially Spotify - the service links to my twitter, facebook and tumblr accounts, and pulls in music from people I follow.

I’ve been using it for several months now and Ex.fm helps me discover so many more bands than any other service. Also, the above photo is a screengrab from their beautiful iPhone app.

Amanda - can’t comment on your creekmouth tumblr and you asked what ex.fm is. It lets you share music you find online (anywhere). It’s a really good way of getting round the audio limits on here, especially when you can’t find what you want on soundcloud and don’t want to have to upload it yourself.

It’s downloadable here http://ex.fm/ and they also have a tumblr http://blog.extension.fm/

One of the other handy things about it is when you’re listening to music posted on tumblr and want to navigate to the next page it will carry on playing. It also scrobbles to last.fm if you want it to (not so great when people post dodgy music). It used to only be available on Chrome but it’s now got firefox, safari, iphone and android extensions.

INTERVIEW: Monogold

The Softest Glow - Album Art

A Little Background

Monogold is a three piece hailing from Brooklyn, NY. Their DIY approach to music has enabled them to self record and produce their own sound in their personal studio. Their most recent release and first full-length album is 2011’s The Softest Glow. Their 2009 EP, We Animals, continues to receive rave reviews from blogs and magazines throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Last year The Wall Street Journal chose Monogold as a band to see at CMJ, saying, “…bassist Mike Falotico and drummer Jared Apuzzo build rhythmic foundations for guitarist-vocalist Keith Kelly to inhabit with his reverberative falsetto and ringing, euphonic chords. Monogold crafts six-string dreamscapes.”

Their latest album, The Softest Glow has been on constant play around the office it’s an easy and at most points upbeat, sometimes haunting listen from start to finish. Favorite tracks include “Spirit or Something” and “Feel Animal”. As an interesting side note the album art seen above was originally a four foot painting that band member, Keith painted and then photographed to use as the album cover. I would totally hang that anywhere in my domain. Hey Keith, save some talent for the rest of us!

1.  How would you describe your sound and what are your influences?

Our sound seems to come from some eclectic influences. Anything from the 50s 60s surf sound ( The Shadows) to the sparse, rhythmic influence of the Talking Heads.

2. What are some songs or artists you are really in to right now?

On the last tour we were on there was a lot of the new Sharon Van Etten, Beach House, Liars, Ruby Suns being listened to.

3. When you’re not playing music what do you like to do?

When not playing music I (Keith) paint a lot, Jared has his own recording studio, and of course we all dabble in the service industry bartending etc, strictly for the love of it of course.

Upcoming Shows

April 17th - Union Pool
*Many more spring and summer dates will be announced soon.
